Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
A US State Government employed NBRI to design and deploy their first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion survey to all state employees. As a significant employer, the State prides itself on providing a fair, diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace environment. The leadership team is committed to giving a voice to employees so that they may further improve the employee experience for all.
NBRI collaborated with the State to design and deploy the DEI survey. An effective DEI survey goes beyond demographic data to quantify how each employee experiences the organization. The survey was supported by a comprehensive communication plan, including assuring employees about the confidentially of the data, and being transparent about DEI objectives. The data was collected, statistical analyses conducted, and findings and recommendations presented to the Cabinet Office of the State.
Overall perceptions of the State as a place to work were positive. The extent to which individuals enjoy working for the State was a strength. When benchmarked relative to similar employers, this aspect of the employee experience at the State performed significantly above average.
More advanced statistical analyses enabled NBRI to provide the State with a clear picture as to which aspects of DEI had the greatest impact on the overall employee experience. Employees feeling their voice is valued is the most critical factor of the employee experience at the State.
Armed with this insight, the Senior Leadership Team conducted a series of ‘Listening’ sessions across the organization. These events enabled the team to share the survey results and provide employees with opportunities to process and discuss the findings.
The survey data provided the State with a clear starting point to begin reviewing existing policies and procedures to create a welcoming workplace for all employees. Organizational development and cultural change is a journey, not an event, and the State is now well-equipped to continue moving in the right direction.
